Paks Of Money Pouring In

In a move we can only applaud as a further step in the right direction, we have been advised that the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment in the UK (ACE UK), has just launched a 1.2 million National Recycling Fund to help boost carton recycling for the UK's multi-billion beverage market. Agreed between member companies Tetra Pak, Elopak and SIG Combibloc, this fund is to increase industry support to local authorities and other organisations in order to help them establish carton collection.

Richard Hands, Chairman of ACE UK and Environment Manager of Tetra Pak UK & Ireland, is quoted as saying that: "Consumers are under the misapprehension that cartons are difficult to recycle." Which we can only agree with. He then goes on to say, "The industry recognised it was time to take the initiative to improve carton recycling rates in the UK, as seen possible in other European countries. It is this collaborative effort and determination to improve which have led to today's announcement." So we look forward to seeing our misapprehensions put to rest.

An initial 300,000 investment from Tetra Pak, which was announced earlier year, and we presume delivered, is said to have generated 'an extremely encouraging response from local authorities, recycling companies and retailers seeking to offer carton collection services to their customers'

These funds are stated as already helping to support a number of activities, such as the establishment of bring-bank collection points, the provision of kerbside collection services, transportation, the installation of sorting equipment and the creation of public awareness campaigns. Check out the rather natty website to find out what's what and where here:www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk

The industry has a goal of national coverage of carton collection by the end of 2008. The number of local authority areas with collection now stands at over 50, and many more are in the pipeline.

Glad we've kept our several hundred then, as our area 'may be interested in the future' Can't wait!
